Three athletes at a World Championships, and one of them won it: Barshim's third straight world title — a year after asking whether two men could share an Olympic gold.
Qatar took three athletes to the Eugene 2022 World Championships and came home with a gold: Mutaz Essa Barshim won the high jump at 2.37, a world lead, for his third consecutive world title after London 2017 and Doha 2019.

Three Athletes, One Gold
Qatar's entire 2022 World Championships fits in three names, and only one of them mattered on the scoreboard. In Eugene, Mutaz Essa Barshim won the high jump at 2.37 — a world lead — ahead of Woo Sang-hyeok (2.35) and Andriy Protsenko (2.33), with Gianmarco Tamberi fourth at 2.33. It was Barshim's third consecutive world title, after London 2017 and Doha 2019: nobody else has done that in this event. Qatar finished 22nd in the medal table, with one gold and nothing else — Femi Ogunode went out in the sprint rounds and Adam Ali Musab did not start the 1500.
The season had a hole in it, too. Abderrahman Samba, the 400 m hurdler who had run 46.98, tore a hamstring warming up for the Doha Diamond League in May and lost the entire year — no Eugene, no season. A country with three athletes at a World Championships cannot absorb an injury like that; it simply becomes a smaller team.
Share, or Jump?
Eugene sits between the two most quoted moments in modern high jumping, and Barshim is in both. In Tokyo, a year earlier, he and Tamberi had each cleared 2.37 and each failed 2.39, and when the officials offered a jump-off Barshim asked whether they could have two golds instead. A rule change from 2009 had made the tie-break optional; the answer was yes, and the picture went around the world.

Three years after that, in Paris, the same situation produced the opposite answer: Hamish Kerr and Shelby McEwen tied at 2.36 and chose to jump it off, and Kerr won at 2.34. Barshim, on that night, took the bronze that made him the first high jumper with medals at four Olympic Games. He has since ruled out a fifth, and a foot injury carried since April 2025 cost him the farewell he wanted at the Tokyo World Championships. He has not announced a retirement, and we will not announce one for him.

No kit deal between the Qatari athletics federation and any brand is documented for 2022 — the Nike agreement that turns up in searches belongs to Qatari football, and we do not extend it by assumption. The archive holds Qatar international team pieces from the 2022 programme, and we describe them from what is on them.

What did Qatar win at the 2022 World Championships?
One gold: Mutaz Essa Barshim's high jump title at 2.37, a world lead. It was his third consecutive world title and left Qatar 22nd in the medal table; the other two Qatari athletes did not progress.
Why did Barshim and Tamberi share the Tokyo Olympic gold?
They both cleared 2.37 and both failed 2.39. A 2009 rule change made the jump-off optional, so when Barshim asked the officials whether they could have two golds, the answer was yes.
Has Mutaz Essa Barshim retired?
He has not announced a formal retirement. He ruled out competing at LA 2028 and a foot injury carried since April 2025 kept him out of the Tokyo 2025 Worlds, where he had hoped to say goodbye.
