Six laundry habits destroy technical fabric: fabric softener, dryer heat, chlorine bleach, ironing directly on prints, leaving sweat in the fabric, and dry cleaning printed kit. Technical fabric almost never fails on the track. It fails in the laundry room. The polyester/elastane blends behind pro elite singlets, speedsuits, and tracksuits are engineered to handle sweat, stretch, and speed — but they have specific weaknesses, and everyday laundry habits hit every one of them. 1. Fabric Softener

What happens: Fabric softener coats technical fibers in a waxy buildup that blocks moisture-wicking. Nike’s care guidance explains the mechanism: softener builds up “a waxy substance” on workout fabrics “that causes fabrics to be less absorbent.” That coating clogs the very fibers designed to pull sweat off your skin and move it outward — the singlet still looks perfect, but it now holds sweat like a cotton tee. It is the most counterintuitive killer on this list because it makes fabric feel better while making it perform worse. adidas puts it in four words on its Climacool apparel: do not use fabric softener.

The fix: Leave it out. Technical fabric does not need softening — its hand feel comes from the knit, not from additives. If odor is your worry, the answer is a lighter dose of mild detergent and washing soon after wearing, not softener.

2. Dryer Heat

What happens: Dryer heat attacks a fitted technical garment on three fronts at once: per Nike’s care guidance, it damages the fabric, causes shrinkage, and weakens the power of the elastic. On a compression-fit singlet or speedsuit, the elastane is the fit — once heat has slackened it, the second-skin cut is gone and no wash will bring it back. If the garment carries printed graphics, heat softens the adhesive underneath them too (more on that in point 4).

The fix: Air dry, always. Rack or hanger, away from heat sources. Technical polyester retains very little water, so the inconvenience is minimal — these garments air dry fast.

3. Chlorine Bleach

What happens: Chlorine bleach is not safe for spandex — that statement comes from Clorox, the bleach company itself. Since nearly every fitted piece of track and field kit is a polyester/elastane blend, a chlorine wash chemically attacks the stretch fibers that hold the garment’s shape.

The fix: When whites need brightening, use an oxygen-based bleach product instead. Clorox’s recommended route is a presoak — dissolve the oxygen product and soak for up to eight hours before laundering. 4. Ironing Directly on Prints

What happens: An iron pressed onto a print can crack, peel, or distort it. The federation lettering, sponsor marks, and event graphics on athlete-issue kit are typically heat-transfer vinyl or plastisol screen prints — materials applied with heat, and therefore vulnerable to it. adidas warns on its team wear that heat causes “cracking and peeling of vinyl plastisol lettering inks,” and its care labels state outright: “do not iron motif.” On a collectible piece, a cracked crest is the difference between issued-condition and damaged.

The fix: Ideally, do not iron technical kit at all — it rarely needs it. If a garment requires pressing, turn it inside out or place a cloth between iron and fabric, and keep the iron away from every printed element.

5. Leaving Sweat in the Fabric

What happens: Sweat left in fabric weakens the fibers. Sweat is acidic, and the University of Georgia Extension warns that perspiration weakens most fibers over time. The singlet that sits crumpled in a kit bag until laundry day is degrading the whole time: the visible symptom is yellowed staining, the invisible one is fiber damage. A garment stored damp adds mildew risk on top.

6. Dry Cleaning Printed Kit

What happens: Dry-cleaning solvents attack the adhesive and plastisol that bond heat-transfer prints to the fabric. Dry cleaning sounds like the premium option for a premium garment — it is exactly the wrong one: the process meant to protect the garment dissolves the layer holding its graphics on.
