What Is a Racing Singlet?

A racing singlet is the classic sleeveless competition top of track and field: a featherweight vest, cut slim, worn over briefs or half tights. Modern elite singlets are built almost entirely from polyester blended with a small amount of elastane — the adidas adizero racing singlet, for example, is 86% recycled polyester and 14% elastane — and true race vests are light, typically 40–70 grams.

That polyester base is doing real work. Polyester is hydrophobic — it barely absorbs moisture into the fiber itself. Instead, as the American Chemical Society explains, capillary action through the fabric’s micropores pulls sweat away from your skin to the surface, where it evaporates. This is the principle behind Nike Dri-FIT, adidas AEROREADY, and every serious wicking fabric in the sport: keep the sweat moving, keep the garment light, keep you dry.

The top tier goes further with body-mapping. Nike’s Dri-FIT ADV uses Sports Research Lab sweat and heat-zone data to engineer the material “pixel by pixel,” placing zoned knits and targeted mesh exactly where athletes run hottest. ASICS body-maps ventilation in its METARUN singlet; adidas perforates its adizero race tops. Across brands, the idea is the same: a singlet is a ventilation machine.

What Is a Speedsuit?

A speedsuit (or racing suit) is a one-piece or two-piece skin-tight garment covering torso and hips — sometimes with short legs — designed to present the smoothest, most stable surface to the air. Where the singlet is built to breathe, the speedsuit is built to slip through the wind.

The clearest public example of the engineering involved is Nike’s AeroSwift program. Introduced in March 2016, AeroSwift was built around a simple principle: eliminate excess material and keep weight to a minimum. For the 2016 “Vapor” track and field kits — worn by the USA, Brazil, Germany, and China in Rio — Nike combined a four-way stretch knit and breathable engineered mesh with “AeroBlades,” small texture elements positioned through hundreds of hours of wind-tunnel testing. Nike called the result the greatest drag reduction of any Nike track and field kit to date.

Speedsuits still ventilate — AeroSwift fabric uses single knit where breathability matters, double knit where structure is needed, and ventilation holes constructed directly into the knit itself. But the design priority is aerodynamics first, cooling second. A singlet flips that hierarchy.

The Core Trade-Off: Aerodynamics vs Ventilation

The choice comes down to one trade-off:

  • The speedsuit optimizes for drag. A taut, wind-tunnel-tuned surface with no flapping fabric is the entire point. That is most valuable when speeds are highest and races are shortest.
  • The singlet optimizes for heat dissipation. Open cut at the shoulders and arms, minimal coverage, maximum airflow over skin. That matters most when you are producing heat for many minutes at a time.

This maps onto how elite athletes dress. Sprinters — racing seconds, at maximum velocity — have made the speedsuit a championship tradition. Distance runners — racing for minutes to over an hour, managing heat the whole way — overwhelmingly choose the singlet. Follow that pattern and you are not guessing; you are copying the revealed preference of the fastest people alive.

Comfort and Practicality: The Unglamorous Deciders

Wind tunnels do not decide every race-day choice. Logistics do.

Bathroom breaks. A singlet-and-briefs setup means a pre-race nervous stop takes seconds. A one-piece speedsuit means partially undressing in a portable toilet ten minutes before the gun. Plenty of athletes who love the speedsuit’s feel choose a two-piece or a singlet for exactly this reason — especially for longer events with longer warm-up windows.

Layering. Singlets play well with arm sleeves, base layers underneath in cold weather, and a warm-up top over the top until the last minute. A skin-tight suit gives you fewer options once you are stripped down.

Time in the garment. A sprinter wears their suit for a matter of minutes between check-in and the finish. A distance runner might be in their kit for two hours across warm-up, race, and cool-down. The longer you are in it, the more the singlet’s easy fit and airflow pay off.

Fit: How Each Should Feel

A racing singlet should be slim and close through the chest — no billowing fabric — but never restrictive. Racerback cuts, like the adizero’s, free the shoulders completely. If it moves with you and you forget it is there, it fits.

A speedsuit should feel like a firm, even second skin: snug everywhere, pinching nowhere. Four-way stretch knits are engineered to hold tension across the body without restricting your range of motion at the hips and shoulders. If a suit wrinkles or gapes, it is too big — loose fabric defeats the aerodynamic purpose. If it restricts your knee drive, it is too small.
