HALF
TIGHTS
A close fit, less loose fabric, and a place on the track and the road. What half tights are, how to compare their construction, and how to choose a pair from the archive.
Half tights are close-fitting running shorts, usually finishing around mid-thigh. Their appeal is the feel: a stretch garment that follows your stride instead of a loose shell. Length, lining and compression vary by model; a snug fit alone does not tell you the pressure a garment applies.
Choose for fit, coverage and the details of the individual pair. Research on sports compression is useful context, but it does not establish performance benefits for every pair in this archive.

What half tights are
Half tights are the fitted answer to the racing-shorts question: a stretch knit worn as the outer garment. A split short hangs away from the leg; a half tight sits close. The archive also includes shorter tights, so compare the actual cut rather than treating every piece in this category as the same length.
On the track or the road, the useful question is how the garment feels over your distance. A waistband that feels secure standing still may behave differently in motion. Check leg length, seams and lining alongside the label size.

The compression question
Wang et al. (2025) reviewed 51 trials involving 899 participants; 33 trials contributed to the primary analyses. Race time and time to exhaustion showed no significant improvement. Soft-tissue vibration was reduced, but evidence certainty was low to very low. These results cover several compression garment types, not just half tights.
Brown et al. (2017) reported a small pooled recovery benefit across 23 studies, with a larger estimate for strength. A 2026 review of post-exercise compression in endurance athletes found very uncertain soreness evidence and unresolved effects on subsequent endurance performance. Different populations, outcomes and wear protocols limit direct comparisons.
Our buying advice is to prioritise a comfortable, stable fit. Half tights can still ride up or rub, and more pressure is not automatically better. None of these reviews establishes a benefit for a particular archive piece.
How the race pair is built
Look at the individual pair. Team editions differ by brand, season and athlete cut; specifications from a current retail model do not automatically apply to an older team issue.
- The knitStretch blends balance support and movement. As one retail example, Tracksmith Strata lists 62% nylon and 38% elastane. Check the label or listing for the pair you are buying.
- Bonded constructionSome models use bonding or free-cut hems; others use stitched seams. Check seam placement and finish rather than assuming a particular construction prevents rubbing.
- The gripperSome hems include silicone grip. Look for its presence and condition in the photographs; it is not a feature of every pair.
- The linerLining varies by model. Confirm whether the pair is lined and whether that arrangement suits how you intend to wear it.
- Race vs trainingPockets can also appear on race models: Tracksmith Strata has two gel pockets. For longer runs, check storage alongside fit; for archive kit, use the individual listing.
- The canvasTeam colours, logos and edition details distinguish archive pieces. Compare the listing photographs and condition notes before choosing.
The best specification is the one confirmed for the actual piece: its label, photographs, measurements and condition.
How to choose yours
Start with your measurements and the information on the individual listing. Team-issued cuts may differ from current retail sizing.
- Second-skin fitAim for a close fit that allows a full stride without digging in. Between sizes, compare waist and hip measurements with the size guide; do not automatically choose the smaller size.
- Test them movingCheck the fit while bending and striding. Look for rubbing, a rolling waistband, restriction or hems that keep riding up.
- Match the eventFor speed work, check unrestricted movement. For longer runs, also consider lining, seam comfort and any storage you need.
- Length checkMeasure a pair you already like from crotch to hem, then compare the inseam if provided. Half tights and short tights in this collection have different lengths.
- Archive realityCheck the available size and condition on the product page. Archive availability changes, and a sold-out listing is not a promise of a future restock.
Unsure about an unlisted measurement? Ask about the piece before ordering, with the product name and the measurement you need.

What are half tights in running?
Half tights are close-fitting stretch running shorts, usually ending around mid-thigh and worn as an outer garment. Leg length, lining and the pressure of the fabric vary by model.
Do compression half tights make you faster?
A faster race is not a reliable buying promise. Research findings depend on the garment, outcome and study; they do not establish performance benefits for the individual products sold here.
Why do sprinters wear half tights instead of shorts?
A close fit offers less loose fabric and a different feel from split shorts. Comfort is individual: fitted tights can still rub or ride up if the cut or size does not suit the wearer.
How should half tights fit?
Close to the body while allowing comfortable movement, without digging in at the waist or hem. Compare your measurements with the size guide and any measurements in the listing. Do not automatically size down between sizes.
What is the difference between half tights and racing shorts?
Half tights use a close-fitting stretch construction; racing shorts usually have a looser shell, sometimes with split sides. Both are used for running. Liners, pockets and length depend on the individual model.
