2022

Two athletics medals at the Worlds in Eugene, sixteen at the home Europeans in Munich — an eight-fold home surge that topped the medal table.

Germany won two athletics medals at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene and sixteen at the home European Championships in Munich three weeks later — topping the Munich athletics medal table.

This is the German 2022 season told through its two acts: a quiet Worlds in Oregon, a home surge in Munich, Malaika Mihambo as the through-line, and the Germany Pro Elite 2022 kit.

Germany's 2022 track-and-field season had two acts, three weeks apart. In mid-July the World Championships were held in Eugene, Oregon; in mid-August the European Championships came to Munich, on home soil. The same athletes went from two medals abroad to sixteen at home.

Eugene was lean: two medals, roughly 19th in the standings. Munich was a home surge: sixteen medals — seven gold, seven silver, two bronze — and top of the athletics medal table. The contrast is the story of the year.

Eugene: a quiet Worlds

At the World Championships in Eugene, Germany won just two medals.

Malaika Mihambo defended her world long-jump title with 7.12 m — her second world crown after Doha 2019. The women's 4×100m squad (Pinto, Burghardt, Lückenkemper, Haase) took bronze in 42.03. That was the lot: a quiet Worlds for a big team, with Mihambo the one gold.

Munich: sixteen at home

Three weeks later, in a packed Munich Olympiastadion, Germany won sixteen medals and topped the athletics table.

The seven golds spread across the programme: Gina Lückenkemper in the 100m (10.99), Konstanze Klosterhalfen in the 5000m, Julian Weber in the javelin (87.66 m), Niklas Kaul in the decathlon, Richard Ringer in the marathon, plus the women's 4×100m relay and the women's marathon team. Seven silver and two bronze filled out the haul.

Mihambo was the through-line — long-jump gold in Eugene, long-jump silver in Munich (7.03 m). The home crowd, the home track and the depth events a home championship rewards — walks, marathon teams, throws — turned two medals into sixteen. The chart below puts the two meets on the same scale.

The kit: Germany Pro Elite 2022

Germany raced 2022 in the Germany Pro Elite 2022 cycle — the race-issued kit made for the national-team athletes, not a retail line with a badge on it. The German federation (DLV) has been supplied by Nike since 2010.

What “Pro Elite” means here. Pro Elite pieces are issued to the athletes through the team channel: cut, weight and finishing specified for competition, in a run limited to what the squad receives. When a piece leaves that channel it is not replaced.

No piece from the 2022 German cycle is in the archive at the moment. The rest of the German range is below, and anything from 2022 that reaches us is listed there.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many athletics medals did Germany win in 2022?

Eighteen across the two championships: two at the World Championships in Eugene (one gold, one bronze) and sixteen at the home European Championships in Munich (seven gold, seven silver, two bronze).

Why did Germany win so many more medals in Munich than in Eugene?

Munich was the home European Championships, three weeks after the Worlds. Home crowd, home track and the depth events a home championship rewards — the walks, marathon teams and throws — turned two medals into sixteen, and Germany topped the athletics medal table.

Who won Germany's golds at the 2022 European Championships?

Gina Lückenkemper (100m, 10.99), Konstanze Klosterhalfen (5000m), Julian Weber (javelin, 87.66 m), Niklas Kaul (decathlon), Richard Ringer (marathon), plus the women's 4×100m relay and the women's marathon team.

What did Malaika Mihambo do in 2022?

She was the through-line of the German year: long-jump gold at the Worlds in Eugene (7.12 m, her second world title) and long-jump silver at the home Europeans in Munich (7.03 m). She is still competing, with Olympic long-jump silver at Paris 2024 since.

What kit did Germany wear in 2022?

The Germany Pro Elite 2022 collection — the athlete-issued team kit for that cycle, supplied by Nike (the DLV's supplier since 2010). No 2022 piece is in the archive right now; the full German collection is linked below.
