What the team jacket is

The team jacket is what goes over the race kit rather than into the race. It lives in the long administrative corridor of a championship — the warm-up track, the call room, the transfer, the minutes at the site before the gun — and then again afterwards, in the mixed zone and on the podium. An athlete in a final might wear it for two hours and race for ten seconds.

That corridor is longer than most people think, and it is timed to the minute. At a European or World Championships every athlete passes a call room with fixed reporting times — the countdown above is the actual schedule from the Munich 2022 team manual. A pole vaulter enters the system 95 minutes before their event starts; sprinters, 40.

The kit answer to all that waiting is a family of jackets, not one: a lightweight shell for mild evenings, a weatherproof layer for rain sessions, and — in some federation kits — a dedicated podium jacket that exists purely for the ceremony.

The wait it was built for

Follow the countdown and the jacket's job description writes itself. Warm-up raises muscle temperature; the call room and transfer then hold the athlete in queues and corridors where that heat drains away. The jacket's work is keeping the warm-up's interest earned until the last possible minute.

Field athletes live at the site for 30 to 60 minutes between attempts, which is why you see jumpers and throwers dressed and undressed a dozen times in one final — layer on between attempts, off to jump. Track athletes strip once, about five to seven minutes out, and their kit goes into the basket that follows them to the start.

Then the race ends and the jacket comes back: mixed-zone interviews happen in team layers, and medal ceremonies are dressed in the team's formal kit — which is where the podium jacket, the rarest cut in this family, does its only work.

Because jackets survive being worn — nobody races in them, nobody tears them on a spike — they outlive the rest of their kits, which is why the jacket rail of an archive runs deeper in older cycles than the singlet rail ever can.
