TRACK
PANTS
The trousers of the warm-up lap: worn over the race kit, built to come off over spikes. What track pants are, how the three exits differ, and how to choose a pair.
The Pants collection includes full-length warm-up trousers and shorter training or travel cuts. Ankle zips are a feature of some long track pants; they are not a feature of every piece in this category.
Fabrics and construction vary by model. Cotton blends appear alongside synthetic fabrics in the collection. Check the individual listing for composition, cut, fastenings and condition before choosing your pair.

What track pants are
Track pants are worn to and from the work: over the race kit on the warm-up track, in the call room, between attempts, and on every bus and flight of a season. They come out of the same issued set as the team jacket — which is why the two usually share colours and badging — and like the jacket, they never start a race.
Their defining engineering problem is the exit. An athlete in spikes cannot pull an ordinary trouser leg over a spiked shoe without sitting down in the mud, and nobody sits down in a call room corridor. The three answers to that problem are the gate above — and athletics chose the middle one.

The exit problem
The ankle zip is the piece of design that makes a track pant a track pant. Open the zip and the cuff widens enough to clear a spiked shoe; the pants come off standing, in seconds, minutes before the gun. It is the same logic as the long tight's zip, applied to a looser garment.
Basketball solved the same problem more loudly: full side snaps that let the whole leg tear away in one pull, built for bench players entering mid-game. The tearaway pant is a legitimate branch of the family — but on the warm-up track its theatre is unnecessary, and issued athletics pants stay with the zip.
The open hem survives at the training end of the set: daily-mileage pants, travel pants, cotton cuts for the hotel — garments that come off at home, where sitting down is allowed.
How a pair is built
The fabric tags in this rail tell the family's whole story.
- The shellFabric varies across the rail. The Nike Great Britain 2019 Cotton Short Pants, for example, list 80% cotton and 20% polyester. Read each product’s composition instead of inferring it from the category.
- The weatherproof pairStorm and Storm Fit pants — wind and rain protection over the race kit, matching the Storm jackets of their kits.
- The winter pairTherma pants trap air for cold-season warm-ups — the insulated end of the family.
- The light pairLightweight pants pack small and add nothing — the default for mild evenings and travel.
- The ankleZips at the cuff on track cuts — the exit-over-spikes feature that defines the garment.
- The waistElastic with a drawcord — the pants sit over briefs or tights, so the waist does the holding.

How to choose yours
Choosing track pants is choosing the pair that matches the rest of your set.
- Match the jacketPants and jackets were issued as pairs — same cycle, same colours; the tracksuit rail holds the sets that stayed together.
- Weather picks the cutLightweight for mild, Storm for rain, Therma for winter — the supplier's label names the job.
- Check the ankleZips mean a track cut; open hems mean a training or travel cut — both issued, different jobs.
- Street sizingUse the maker’s size guide and the measurements in the listing. Compare them with a pair that fits you, especially when choosing older team kit.
- Zips and drawcords firstCheck any cuff zips and waist cord, along with seams, fabric and hems. Use the listing’s condition notes and photographs, and ask about anything unclear.
- Shorts count tooThe short pants in this rail are the summer branch of the same family — over-kit cover for warm evenings.

The over-kit trousers of an issued team set: worn on the warm-up track, in the call room, between attempts and in transit, over the race kit — never in the race. They match the team jacket of their cycle in colour and badging.
Why do track pants have ankle zips?
So they come off over spikes. Opening the cuff zip widens the leg enough to clear a spiked shoe, letting an athlete strip standing, in seconds, minutes before competing — without sitting down in a call room corridor.
What is the difference between track pants and tearaway pants?
The exit. Track pants open at the ankle with a zip; tearaway pants open the entire leg with side snaps in one pull — a basketball convention for mid-game entries. Athletics kits almost always use the quieter ankle zip.
What are team track pants made of?
Composition varies by model. The Pants collection includes cotton blends as well as synthetic fabrics. Check the fabric label and the individual product description for the exact composition.
How should track pants fit?
Fit varies by maker, model and season. Use the size guide and any measurements in the listing, then compare them with a pair you already own. Ask for clarification if a measurement is missing.
