HALF
TIGHTS
The locked-in garment: compression to mid-thigh, no flap, no chafe — and an evidence base with a surprisingly honest answer. What half tights are, what compression really does, and how to choose a race-issued pair.
Half tights are fitted compression shorts ending at mid-thigh, worn as the outer racing garment by sprinters and, increasingly, elite marathoners. They exist for fit — zero loose fabric, zero chafe, a locked-in feel from the blocks — not for proven speed.
That last part matters: across 51 randomized studies, compression garments show no significant effect on race times. What they measurably do is damp muscle vibration while you run and nudge recovery afterwards. The rest of their argument is made of fit, and it is a good argument.

What half tights are
Half tights are the fitted answer to the racing-shorts question: a compression knit that ends at mid-thigh, worn as the outer garment. Where a split short floats free, a half tight locks on. Sprinters have made them the default from the blocks — nothing moves at 40 km/h except the athlete — and the 800, 1500 and the hurdles largely followed.
The newer story is the road. Elite marathoning has visibly shifted from split shorts toward half tights over the last cycle — the fitted look Eliud Kipchoge made familiar is now everywhere at the front of major marathons. The lure is the same as on the track: a locked-in feel, no flapping fabric, and coverage that keeps the big muscles of the thigh snug for two hours.

That question has actual data behind it, and the honest answer is more interesting than the marketing — see the chart above.
The compression question
Compression clothing is one of the few pieces of kit with a real research literature. The latest meta-analysis — 51 studies, nearly 900 runners — found no significant effect on race time or time to exhaustion. Wearing tighter fabric does not make you faster, and the honest version of this garment does not claim it does.
What the same analysis did find: compression significantly reduces soft-tissue vibration — the jiggle of muscle on impact — and an earlier review of 23 studies found a small overall recovery benefit, strongest for the return of muscle strength in the hours and days after hard work. Less vibration during, slightly fresher after: that is the evidence-backed case.
The rest of the case is fit, and it needs no study. A half tight cannot ride up, cannot chafe a seam across the thigh at full stride, and gives a sprinter in the blocks the “locked-in” feel that loose cloth never will. That — not magic seconds — is why the start line wears them.
How the race pair is built
A race-issued pair is a study in tension: every panel cut to grip without strangling.
- The knitHigh-elastane compression blends — verified examples run from 83/17 polyester-spandex (Nike Fast) to 62/38 nylon-elastane (Tracksmith) — four-way stretch, opaque under tension.
- Bonded constructionFull bonding and free-cut hems on top pairs: no stitched hem at the thigh, no chafe line, edges that end clean.
- The gripperSilicone at the hem keeps the leg planted through a full stride or a hurdle clearance.
- The linerA built-in brief liner (92/8 in the Nike Fast) does the underwear's job.
- Race vs trainingRace pairs strip to nothing; training versions add drop-in pockets that swallow up to six gels — useful miles, never worn in a final.
- The canvasFederation colours and the hip-number panel — adhesive identification goes on the tights in photo-finish events.

How to choose yours
Half tights reward honest sizing more than any other piece in the kit.
- Second-skin fitThey should feel like a firm handshake on the thigh. Between sizes? Size down — a loose compression garment is neither.
- Test them movingJump, squat, stride. A right pair never slides up the leg or folds at the hip.
- Match the eventSprint and hurdles: as fitted as you can race in. Road racing: same fit, but check the liner suits two hours of sweat.
- Length checkMid-thigh coverage, commonly around an 8″ inseam in commercial race pairs — enough to keep the hamstring covered without touching the knee.
- Archive realityRace-issued pairs are cut for one team cycle and do not restock. In-stock first; sold-out pieces stay listed because they rarely return.

Half tights are fitted compression shorts that end at mid-thigh, worn as the outer racing garment. Sprinters use them for a locked-in feel out of the blocks with no loose fabric, and elite marathoners have increasingly adopted them over split shorts.
Do compression half tights make you faster?
No. A 2025 meta-analysis of 51 studies found no significant effect of compression garments on race time or time to exhaustion. What compression does do is significantly reduce soft-tissue muscle vibration during running, and reviews find a small benefit to recovery afterwards, especially strength recovery.
Why do sprinters wear half tights instead of shorts?
Fit. A half tight cannot flap, ride up or chafe at full stride, keeps the thigh muscles snugly covered, and gives a locked-in feel from the blocks. Nothing about the choice is aerodynamic magic — it is about fabric that stays exactly where it was put.
How should half tights fit?
Like a second skin: firm compression on the thigh without cutting in at the waist or hem. If you are between sizes, size down, and test the fit by jumping and striding — a correct pair never slides or folds. Commercial race pairs commonly run around an 8-inch inseam.
What is the difference between half tights and racing shorts?
Racing shorts are a loose woven shell, often with split sides; half tights are a fitted compression knit. Both carry a built-in liner and both appear on elite start lines — shorts still dominate distance track races, while half tights own the sprints and have spread through road racing.
