One Cross at Two Metres

Spain's 2014 opened indoors with a medal decided by a single failed attempt. In the world indoor high jump final in Sopot on 8 March, Ruth Beitia was the cleanest jumper in the field: first-time clearances at every height up to 1.97 m, where Mariya Kuchina and Kamila Lićwinko each needed two tries. Then, at 2.00 m, the order reversed — the other two went over first time and Beitia knocked the bar off once before clearing. Nobody managed 2.02 m. On countback the two first-time clearances shared the gold, and the woman who had been flawless for four heights took bronze.

At the European Championships in Zürich, 12–17 August, Spain sent 74 athletes and finished eighth in the table with six medals: two gold, one silver, three bronze.

The cold-weather race layer

Long tights are full-length stretch knits — roughly 20–28% elastane — worn in athletics for cold-weather training, winter warm-ups and, in events like cross country, for racing itself.

The engineering is settled: wicking knit, ankle zips for changing over spikes, hi-vis trims for dark miles, and brushed or merino-blend interiors when winter gets serious. The craft is in choosing for your coldest real training day — and dressing 10–20°F warmer than the forecast feels.

Tights below ~45°F / 7°C per most guides; personal beyond that
The golden rule
Dress as if 10–20°F warmer — running heats you
