Spain won two athletics medals in Rio, and the gold belonged to the oldest jumper ever to win one. On 20 August 2016 Ruth Beitia, 37 years and four months old, cleared 1.97 m in the high jump final — the lowest winning height at an Olympics since Sara Simeoni's 1.97 in 1980 — and became, in World Athletics' own words, the oldest jumps champion in Olympic history and the first Spanish woman to win Olympic athletics gold. It was Spain's first Olympic athletics title since Barcelona 1992, twenty-four years earlier.
Four days before her, Orlando Ortega had run 13.17 for silver in the 110 m hurdles behind Omar McLeod: the first Olympic sprint or hurdles medal in Spanish history.
