The 2025 season compressed its history into one Eugene afternoon. At the Prefontaine Classic on 5 July — the brand's own meeting, its fiftieth edition — Beatrice Chebet ran 5000 m in 13:58.06, the first woman in history under fourteen minutes, and Faith Kipyegon took the 1500 m world record to 3:48.68, nine days after running the fastest mile ever by a woman at Nike's Breaking4 in Paris. In the same meeting Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, a Nike athlete since 2022, won the 100 m in 10.75. In September 2026, both records still stand.
Breaking4 was the brand's Breaking2 for the mile. On 26 June 2025, at the Stade Charléty in Paris, Nike put Kipyegon behind thirteen pacers — Grant Fisher and Georgia Bell among them — in a speedsuit, a 3D-printed bra and titanium-pinned spikes built for her alone, and asked for the first sub-four mile by a woman.
Racing shorts are lightweight split-seam shorts built for track and road racing: a woven shell of roughly 64–92 grams, a built-in brief liner instead of underwear, and an open outer seam that frees the leg at full stride.
The split itself has a birthday. British marathoner Ron Hill tore his side seams open in frustration, won the 1970 Boston Marathon, and founded Ronhill that September to sell the fix. Every race-issued pair in this archive descends from that pair of scissors.
