The File on an Extinct Event

Portugal took 15 athletes to Doha in ten events and brought home one medal — and it came from the far edge of the programme, in the middle of the night. The men's 50 kilometre walk started at midnight to dodge the heat and was walked in about 32 degrees anyway. Yusuke Suzuki won it, Japan's first world title in a walk. Three seconds behind him, second: João Vieira, 4:04:59.

Vieira was 43 years and 221 days old, at his eleventh World Championships. Guinness certified what that meant: the oldest medallist in the history of these championships. And there is a second layer to the medal — it can never be matched, because the event was already being written out of the sport. The 50 km made its last Olympic appearance in Tokyo 2021, where Vieira, at 45, finished fifth. On the women's side, Inês Henriques, the 2017 world champion at the distance and the first ratified world-record holder in it, did not finish her Doha race.

The kit nobody sees on TV

A team t-shirt is the training and travel piece of an issued athletics kit — worn in the hotel, the bus and the warm-up area, never in the race. It carries the same federation badge as the competition kit, in street sizing and heavier knits.

The modern issue is polyester — 50 of the 56 tees in this archive declare it — because cotton holds twenty times the moisture. Cotton survives at the travel end of the set, where nobody sweats and softness wins.

The rule
World Athletics TR5 covers the race uniform only — the tee sits outside it
The fibre
Polyester: regain 0.4% vs cotton's 8.5% at 20°C / 65% RH
The archive split
50 of 56 declare polyester; 8 mention cotton — the travel cuts

Questions we get asked

Is Puma Portugal International Team Pro Elite 2019 T-Shirt authentic?
Yes. It is listed as 100% authentic team-issued kit, from the 2019 season. Every photo on this page is of the actual piece, never a stock shot. Want a closer look at something first? Ask us.
What condition is it in?
It is listed as: With original tags. The photos are of this exact piece, so what you see is what arrives. Ask us before buying if you want more detail on its state.
How does this t-shirt fit?
Team training and travel tee. Regular athletic fit — the standard chart applies. This one is a Puma XL. The size guide lists the body measurements Puma publishes for that size. And it is the only size there is – every piece here is a one-off.
Can I return it if the size is wrong?
Yes. You have 14 days from delivery: send it back unworn, unwashed and with the numbered authentication tag still attached. Return shipping is on you unless the piece arrived damaged, incorrect or not as described. What we cannot do is swap it for another size – every piece is one of a kind, so there is no second one to send. If you have any doubt about the fit, ask us first.
Where does it ship from and how long does it take?
From Switzerland, tracked, worldwide. Free over €150. We pack it in 1–3 business days, then reckon on 3–7 days within Europe and 7–21 for the rest of the world. Customs duties are separate and are not covered.
