The Spring Before Tokyo
Spain's 2025 opened indoors in Apeldoorn with four European medals — led by a comeback completed. Ana Peleteiro, two years on from her first maternity return, won the European indoor triple jump title at 14.37, the continental lead. Around her: silver for the 4×400 quartet (Fernández, Guijarro, Husillos, Erta) in a Spanish record 3:05.18 — Husillos's medal collection still growing seven years after Birmingham — and bronzes for Paula Sevilla over 400 and Lester Lescay in the long jump.
In June, Madrid hosted the European Team Championships First Division; Spain finished sixth as hosts, six and a half points from fourth, in the meet Italy won. And in July the season lost its jumper: Peleteiro announced her second pregnancy and sat out the Worlds.
The Tokyo Target
Tokyo made María Pérez something no walker — no athlete — had ever been. Gold in the 35 km on 13 September in 2:39:01; gold in the 20 km a week later in 1:25:54: the second consecutive double double, after Budapest 2023. Four individual world titles now — close to half of Spain's eleven outdoor world golds in history belong to her.

The medal beside hers announced the succession: Paul McGrath, 23, took bronze in the 20 km on the same morning Pérez won it — the Spanish walking school renewing itself in real time. And one ring out, a generation kept knocking: Quique Llopis fourth in the hurdles by three hundredths, Mariano García fourth in the 800, Mohamed Attaoui fifth in 1:42.21, Adrián Ben and Lescay in their finals. Spain left Tokyo with three medals, and with the clear sense of more coming.
