First, Understand What You’re Fighting

Sweat stains are fiber damage; deodorant stains are residue buildup on top. Test any stain-removal agent on a hidden spot first, such as an inside seam allowance. This is UGA Extension’s standing rule, and it applies doubly to limited-run kit. Apply a small amount, wait, and check that the fabric color and finish are unaffected before treating the visible stain. Thirty seconds of caution protects an irreplaceable garment.

Step-by-Step: Deodorant and Antiperspirant Stains

Step 1 — Work in dishwashing liquid

Rub undiluted hand dishwashing liquid directly into the stained area — that is the UGA Extension method, and it is simple for a reason: dish liquid is built to break down exactly the kind of residue that deodorant leaves behind. Work it in gently with your fingertips. No stiff brushes on technical knit.

Step 2 — Launder as usual (cold, gentle)

Wash the garment following the standard technical-fabric protocol: cold water, gentle cycle, mild detergent, inside out. The dish-liquid pretreatment does the chemical work; the wash carries the residue away.

Step 3 — If the fabric color has changed

Some antiperspirant stains don’t just deposit residue — they alter the fabric color where they sit. For that, UGA Extension offers a two-branch fix: on old stains, apply a few drops of white vinegar to the area; on fresh ones, ammonia is the recommended agent instead. Step 4 — Never apply heat

Do not iron over a deodorant stain, and do not hit it with any other heat source. UGA Extension is unambiguous: heat sets a deodorant stain permanently. Step-by-Step: Old Sweat Stains

  1. Dilute white vinegar with water. No magic ratio here — the guidance calls simply for diluted white vinegar.
  2. Sponge the stained area with the solution, working from the edges inward.

  4. Launder cold and gentle, then air dry and check the result before the garment sees any heat.

When You Need More Muscle: Oxygen Bleach, Never Chlorine

On a polyester/elastane garment, the type of bleach is everything: Clorox’s own guidance states that chlorine bleach is not safe for spandex (elastane). Since virtually every fitted pro elite piece — singlets, speedsuits, tights — contains elastane, chlorine bleach is permanently off the table.

The safe alternative is an oxygen-based bleach product. Clorox recommends the presoak route: dissolve the oxygen product per its label and soak the garment for an extended period — up to eight hours — before laundering.
