Not a sports bra: the crest-carrying, bib-holding outerwear of the women's sprint kit. What racing crop tops are, how the two-piece won the 90s, and how to choose a race-issued one.
A racing crop top is the fitted, midriff-length upper half of the women's track kit, worn with briefs, shorts or half tights. It is official outerwear, not underwear: it carries the federation crest, follows World Athletics uniform rules, and takes the bib pinned to its front.
The two-piece crop kit broke through with Flo-Jo's 1988 season, became the sprint norm through the 1990s, and today anchors a kit system of twenty-plus combinations. The crop is the most-picked module in that matrix — and the piece most often confused with what it is not.

What a racing crop top is
The racing crop top is the upper half of the modern women's track kit: a fitted, midriff-length top worn with briefs, shorts or half tights. It looks like a sports bra to the untrained eye, and the difference matters — a bra is an undergarment, while the crop top is official team outerwear. It carries the federation crest, obeys World Athletics TR5 like any uniform piece, and takes the bib pinned to its front in track events.
At championship level that distinction is enforced, not theoretical: competitors must wear their federation's official clothing, and non-conforming items get taped or removed in the Call Room before the athlete ever reaches the track.

From 1928 to the kit matrix
Women's Olympic track started in 1928 in loose t-shirts and wide shorts, sometimes cinched with a belt. Cuts tightened as synthetics arrived, and by the late 1980s the silhouette had split in two: Florence Griffith-Joyner won her 1988 golds in a high-cut leotard of her own design, and at that year's US trials she also raced in a white crop top with matching briefs — the two-piece kit's most famous early sighting.
Through the 1990s the crop-and-briefs pairing became the women's sprint norm, and it survived even the era's boldest counter-argument — Cathy Freeman's hooded full bodysuit at Sydney 2000. The one-piece grabbed the headlines; the two-piece kept the start lines.

The crop top sits at the centre of that system, the most-picked module in the matrix above.
How the race crop is built
A race crop is engineered more like equipment than like a shirt.
- The fabricLightweight wicking synthetics — polyester or nylon with stretch; a verified modern example runs 76% recycled polyester, 24% spandex with mesh cooling panels.
- Flatlock seamsFlat-stitched edges eliminate skin friction — at sprint arm cadence a raised seam under the arm becomes sandpaper.
- Support, sometimesSome crops carry a built-in shelf bra with removable cups; race-issued team crops are usually a single fitted layer worn over a dedicated sports bra.
- The cutRacerback or wide-strap, hem at the ribs — free shoulders, bare midriff, nothing pulling at the hips.
- The canvasCrest, sponsor mark and bib space — TR5 requires the bib pinned to the front, uncut and unfolded.
The whole garment weighs a few dozen grams and holds its shape at full sprint — which is the entire job description.
How to choose yours
Choosing a race crop is about support strategy first and size chart second.
- Plan the layersMost athletes wear a dedicated sports bra under the race crop — the crop adds fit and identity, the bra does the support. Built-in-bra crops suit lighter support needs.
- Fit closeThe crop should sit flush at ribs and shoulders with zero bounce and no gape at the armhole when the arms drive.
- Check the seamsFlatlock everywhere the arm swings; anything raised will announce itself by 200 m of a session.
- Pair the kitThe matching briefs or tights from the same team cycle complete the set as it was issued and worn.
- Archive realityRace-issued crops are cut for one cycle and do not restock. In-stock first; sold-out pieces stay listed because the runs are small and rarely return.

A racing crop top is the fitted, midriff-length upper half of the modern women's track kit, worn with briefs, shorts or half tights. Unlike a sports bra, it is official team outerwear: it carries the federation crest, complies with World Athletics uniform rules, and takes the bib pinned to its front.
Is a crop top the same as a sports bra?
No. A sports bra is an undergarment built for support; the crop top is outerwear worn over it. Most athletes race with a dedicated bra underneath the crop, though some commercial crops include a built-in shelf bra with removable cups for lighter support needs.
When did crop tops become standard in women's sprinting?
The two-piece crop-and-briefs silhouette broke through in the late 1980s — Florence Griffith-Joyner raced in a white crop top and briefs at the 1988 US trials — and became the women's sprint norm through the 1990s. It remains the most common championship kit today.
What fabric are racing crop tops made of?
Lightweight wicking synthetics: polyester or nylon blended with spandex, with flatlock seams to eliminate friction. A verified modern example uses 76% recycled polyester and 24% spandex with mesh cooling panels.
How should a racing crop top fit?
Flush at the ribs and shoulders with no bounce and no gape at the armhole during arm drive. Plan support first: most racers wear a dedicated sports bra under the crop, so the crop itself should fit close over that layer.
