Italy's 2023 confirmed that Tokyo was no accident: first-ever victory at the European Team Championships in Silesia (426.5 points), then four medals in Budapest — Gianmarco Tamberi's world high jump gold at 2.36, silvers for Fabbri and the 4×100 with Jacobs and Tortu, and Palmisano's walk bronze.

Champions of Europe, First Time Ever
By 2023 the question about Italy was whether Tokyo had been an accident. Silesia answered in June: at the European Team Championships in Chorzów, Italy won the title for the first time in the history of the competition — 426.5 points, ahead of Poland and Germany — on seven event wins, with captain Gianmarco Tamberi taking the high jump at 2.29 in his first competition of the season.

The winter had already produced a shock of its own: at the European Indoors in Istanbul in March, 23-year-old Samuele Ceccarelli beat Marcell Jacobs himself for 60 m gold, 6.48 to 6.50 — an Italian one-two in which the Olympic champion was the two. By August, Ceccarelli was out in the heats in Budapest: the cost of sudden exposure, and a reminder that 2023 Italy was deep enough to absorb it.
Tamberi’s Missing Crown
Budapest completed the set. Gianmarco Tamberi cleared 2.36 on 22 August and became world champion — the only title he did not have, added to his Olympic and European golds. Leonardo Fabbri put the shot 22.34, a lifetime best, for silver; Antonella Palmisano took walk bronze; and the 4×100 — Jacobs, Patta, Rigali, Tortu — ran 37.62 for silver behind the United States. Jacobs's own year stayed split: out in the individual semifinals, silver with the baton in his hand.
Around the medals, the depth chart kept filling: Larissa Iapichino fifth in the long jump, Ayomide Folorunso sixth in the 400 hurdles. Italy left Budapest with four medals and the certainty that Tokyo had been a beginning, not a freak.
The First Joma Year — and the Asics Answer
Budapest 2023 was Italy's first Worlds after leaving Asics: Joma has dressed the Azzurri since January 2023, closing an Asics era of more than twenty-five years.
