Kenya
2019
Five golds at a midnight Worlds, second in the table behind only the USA — and then an October in which the biggest numbers in distance running fell to Kenyans on consecutive days.
Kenya finished the Doha 2019 Worlds second in the medal table with 11 medals — 5 golds, 2 silvers, 4 bronzes — though one bronze was annulled in 2024, so the books today say ten. Then October delivered Kipchoge's 1:59:40 in Vienna, the first (unofficial) sub-two-hour marathon, and Kosgei's 2:14:04 world record in Chicago the very next day.
This is the season on the departures board: the midnight marathon, the 0.01 steeplechase, the eleven-that-became-ten, the October the records fell — and the Nike Kenya 2019 kit, one piece of which is in this archive.

Second in the World, at Midnight
Kenya left Doha 2019 second in the medal table, behind only the United States: five golds, two silvers, four bronzes. And the tone was set on the very first night — the women's marathon went off at 23:59, the first midnight marathon in Worlds history, in 32.7 degrees and 73 percent humidity. Only 40 of 68 starters finished. Ruth Chepngetich won it in 2:32:43, the slowest winning time the championship has ever recorded, and one of the great heat-management runs.

Two of the golds deserve their own line. Conseslus Kipruto kept his steeplechase title by one hundredth of a second — 8:01.35 against Lamecha Girma's 8:01.36, the only world final in the event ever decided by less than two tenths. And on the closing night, Timothy Cheruiyot ran away with the 1500 in 3:29.26, hours after Faith Kipyegon had taken silver behind Sifan Hassan with a national record 3:54.22.

The eleventh medal carries an asterisk that must be printed with it: Rhonex Kipruto's 10,000 m bronze was annulled in 2024, when the biological passport caught up with him — a six-year ban and every result from September 2018 wiped, the road 10K world record with them. Kenya won eleven medals that night; the books today say ten.
The October Departures
What makes 2019 arguably the densest year of modern Kenyan distance running is what happened outside the stadium. It started before Doha: on 15 September in Copenhagen, Geoffrey Kamworor took 22 seconds off the half marathon world record with 58:01. Then, in a single October weekend, the sport's two biggest numbers fell to Kenyans on consecutive days.
Every number on this board has since been beaten — and the Vienna one made official by another Kenyan: Sabastian Sawe, 1:59:30, London, 26 April 2026. Hover or tab on a row. Sources: World Athletics; Wikipedia, INEOS 1:59 Challenge and 2026 London Marathon. Verified August 2026.
The board, and what 2026 did to it (table)
| Departure | Mark | Status in Aug 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Copenhagen, 15 Sep — Kamworor | 58:01 WR | Beaten in chain: Kandie 57:32 → Kejelcha 57:30 → Kiplimo 57:20 (Lisbon, Mar 2026) |
| Doha, 27 Sep — Chepngetich | 2:32:43, gold | Slowest winning time in championship history — and a heat-management masterclass |
| Vienna, 12 Oct — Kipchoge | 1:59:40.2, not official | The barrier fell officially on 26 Apr 2026: Sawe 1:59:30 WR, London |
| Chicago, 13 Oct — Kosgei | 2:14:04 WR | Beaten twice: Assefa 2:11:53 (2023), then Chepngetich 2:09:56 (Chicago 2024), the current WR |
Vienna, 12 October: Eliud Kipchoge ran 1:59:40.2 at the INEOS 1:59 Challenge — the first human being under two hours for the marathon distance. It was never a world record and was never meant to be one: rotating pacer teams and hand-delivered drinks put it outside the rules by design. Chicago, the very next morning: Brigid Kosgei ran 2:14:04, demolishing Paula Radcliffe's 2:15:25 — a record that had stood for 16 years.
None of those numbers survived to 2026 — and that is the best part of the story. The half marathon record passed through Kandie and Kejelcha to Jacob Kiplimo's 57:20. Kosgei's mark fell to Assefa in 2023 and then to Ruth Chepngetich's 2:09:56 in Chicago 2024, the record that still stands. And the two-hour barrier itself fell officially on 26 April 2026, when Sabastian Sawe won London in 1:59:30: a Kenyan did it first under laboratory conditions, and another Kenyan made it official.

Kenya has raced in Nike since 1993, and the current agreement runs to 2028 — in 2026 Nike opened its own presence in Nairobi. The Doha kit belongs to that unbroken line, and the piece we hold from the 2019 allocation is the lightwear jacket: the layer the second-best team in the world warmed up in at midnight.
Nike has outfitted Kenyan athletics without interruption since 1993; the 2019 allocation sits mid-cycle in the longest national kit partnership in the sport. We date the piece from its own labels.
The years since have been kinder to some of Doha's heroes than others. Hellen Obiri took her 5000 m gold to the roads and won New York and Boston twice, plus Olympic marathon bronze in Paris. Faith Kipyegon turned her silver into an era — that story is in our Kenya 2024 season page. Ruth Chepngetich reached the top — the 2:09:56 world record in Chicago 2024 — before a three-year doping ban in October 2025, under which, per the AIU, her results from March 2025 are annulled while the Doha gold and the record itself stand. And Agnes Tirop, bronze at 30:25.20, was killed in October 2021; her story, and the movement that carries her name, is told in our Tirop's Angels piece.
The longer national arc — from Kip Keino to the Nairobi flagship store — is in our history of athletics in Kenya.

How many medals did Kenya win at the Doha 2019 World Championships?
Eleven that night — 5 golds, 2 silvers, 4 bronzes — finishing second in the medal table behind the United States. Rhonex Kipruto's 10,000 m bronze was annulled in 2024 after his doping ban, so the record books today show ten.
Why did the Doha 2019 marathon start at midnight?
To dodge the desert heat — and it barely helped: the women's race went off at 23:59 in 32.7°C and 73 percent humidity, 28 of 68 starters dropped out, and Chepngetich's 2:32:43 is the slowest winning time in championship history.
Was Kipchoge's 1:59:40 in Vienna a world record?
No — the INEOS 1:59 Challenge used rotating pacers and hand-delivered drinks, so it was never record-eligible. The first official sub-two-hour marathon came on 26 April 2026, when Sabastian Sawe won London in 1:59:30.
What kit did Kenya wear in 2019?
Nike — the federation's outfitter since 1993, on an agreement that runs to 2028. The Kenya collection holds the lightwear jacket of the 2019 allocation.
