Kenya won 11 athletics medals at the Paris 2024 Games — 4 golds, 2 silvers, 5 bronzes, the best of any African nation: Beatrice Chebet's 5000/10,000 double, Faith Kipyegon's third consecutive 1500 m gold in an Olympic record 3:51.29, and Emmanuel Wanyonyi's 800 m title at 20.

The Double Orbit
Kenya took eleven medals out of Paris — four golds, two silvers, five bronzes, the best of any African nation in athletics — and the axis of it all was one 24-year-old from Kericho. Beatrice Chebet won the 5000 m on 5 August and the 10,000 m on 9 August: the Olympic distance double, completed inside one week. She had already hung a satellite in the sky in May — 28:54.14 in Eugene, the 10,000 m world record and the first time any woman had broken 29 minutes.

Behind her in that 5000 came the other pillar of the week. Faith Kipyegon took silver there — after a disqualification for contact with Gudaf Tsegay was overturned on appeal the same night — and then, on 10 August, won the 1500 m in 3:51.29, an Olympic record two seconds under her own. It was her third straight Olympic 1500 title: no athlete, man or woman, had ever won the same Olympic running event three times in a row.
Eleven Medals, One Goodbye
The fourth gold belonged to a 20-year-old: Emmanuel Wanyonyi held off the fastest 800 m field of the Games in 1:41.19, and twelve days later ran 1:41.11 in Lausanne — level with Wilson Kipketer as the second-fastest man in history, two tenths off Rudisha's record. Mary Moraa added 800 m bronze; Faith Cherotich and Abraham Kibiwot took bronze in the two steeplechases; Ronald Kwemoi ran 13:15.04 for 5000 m silver; and the marathons closed the account with Benson Kipruto's bronze and Hellen Obiri's — the women's race went to Sifan Hassan, and the Kenyan on that podium was Obiri, not Chepngetich, whose 2:09:56 world record came two months later in Chicago.
And one race ended without a finish line. Eliud Kipchoge, twice Olympic marathon champion, dropped out on the streets of Paris — the first DNF of his marathon career. The Games gave him a different farewell: he carried the flag at the closing ceremony. Kenya's marathon crown did not leave with him; it just changed hands — by April 2026 it belonged to Sabastian Sawe and the first official sub-two-hour marathon, 1:59:30 in London.

Every headline of Paris got louder the following year. Chebet ran 13:58.06 in Eugene in July 2025 — the 5000 m world record and the first woman under 14 minutes — then repeated the distance double at the Tokyo Worlds, leaving her holding the Olympic and world titles at both distances and the world records at 5000 m, 10,000 m and 5 km on the road, all at once. Kipyegon ran the fastest mile in female history at the Breaking4 exhibition (4:06.42, not ratifiable), set a ratified 3:48.68 world record nine days later, and took a fourth world 1500 title in Tokyo. Wanyonyi became world champion in a championship-record 1:41.86 — ahead of Sedjati's 1:41.90 and Arop's 1:41.95 — and was named World Athlete of the Year on the track. Even the steeplechase bronze grew: Faith Cherotich is world champion now, 8:51.69 in Tokyo.
