Spain's 2019 season ran from a three-gold European indoor championships in Glasgow — Ureña, De Arriba and Peleteiro's 14.73 national record — to a single world medal in Doha: Orlando Ortega's 110 m hurdles bronze, awarded on appeal after Omar McLeod's fall dragged him from third to fifth.

Golden Glasgow
The indoor spring of 2019 was the best Spain had had in years: three European indoor golds in Glasgow. Jorge Ureña took the heptathlon with 6218 points, Álvaro de Arriba the 800 — and Ana Peleteiro the triple jump with 14.73, a Spanish record nine centimetres beyond her own mark, clear of Paraskevi Papachristou. Óscar Husillos, one year after Birmingham, took silver in the 400 behind Karsten Warholm: the answer of a man who had refused to let the stepped line define him.
The Bronze That Came on Appeal
Doha gave Spain one medal, and made it earn the thing twice. In the 110 m hurdles final, Omar McLeod fell in the lane beside Orlando Ortega and dragged him off his rhythm; running third at the time, Ortega crossed fifth in 13.30. Spain's first appeal was rejected — contact, said the jury, “is not unusual” in the hurdles. On reconsideration the jury reversed itself: an additional bronze for Ortega, shared ex aequo with Pascal Martinot-Lagarde, with McLeod disqualified.

The rest of the team kept reaching finals without touching the podium: Adrián Ben sixth in the 800 at 20, Peleteiro sixth in the triple, Eusebio Cáceres seventh in the long jump, Javier Cienfuegos seventh in the hammer. And in the midnight walks — started at 23:30 in 31-degree heat and 73 percent humidity — María Pérez ground out eighth place. The woman who would own the event was learning what Doha had to teach.
