Spain
2022
A world title in March, two world bronzes in July, and a ten-medal, four-gold wall in Munich: the season Spanish athletics stopped knocking and walked in.
Spain's 2022 stacked a world indoor 800 m title (Mariano García in Belgrade), two world bronzes in Eugene (Asier Martínez and Mohamed Katir) and a ten-medal European Championships in Munich with four golds — López, Martín, Martínez and García again.
This is the season in full: Belgrade, the Eugene foundation, the Munich wall tile by tile, Peleteiro's maternity year — and the Joma Spain racing set of that cycle, both pieces of which are in this archive.

A World Title Indoors
The season announced itself in March. Mariano García — a shepherd's son from Cuevas de Reyllo with a front-running style that treats championship finals like village races — won the world indoor 800 m title in Belgrade in 1:46.20, after an indoor winter that included a 1:45.12 Spanish record and the year's fastest time. It was Spain's only global title of the season, and it would not be his last: in 2026 he added the world indoor 1500 crown, the first athlete ever to hold both.

Eugene, in July, laid two more bricks: Asier Martínez took world 110 m hurdles bronze in a 13.17 personal best at 22, and Mohamed Katir added bronze in the 1500 with Mario García Romo fourth in the same final — two Spaniards in the top four of the world's deepest race. (Katir is today serving a suspension until February 2028 for whereabouts failures and tampering; his 2022 results stand.)
The Munich Wall
Then came August, and the best European Championships Spain had produced in decades: ten medals in Munich, four of them gold. Miguel Ángel López won the 35 km walk in a championship record, Álvaro Martín reclaimed the 20 km in a 1:19:11 personal best, Asier Martínez converted his Eugene bronze into the European hurdles title at 13.17 again — and Mariano García completed the indoor–outdoor double in the 800, front-running to 1:44.85.

One absence shaped the year as much as any medal: Ana Peleteiro sat 2022 out entirely, announcing her first pregnancy in June and pointing her comeback at 2023. She would return to a European final within fifteen months of giving birth.
