The Year of the Near Miss
The 2022 season put two Rosa athletes at the top of the marathon world — one setting a course record in Tokyo, the other running the second-fastest marathon in history in Chicago and stopping fourteen seconds short of her own team-mate's world record. The gauge below is the whole year in one picture.

Tokyo, Chicago, Zürich
Brigid Kosgei opened the year by winning the Tokyo Marathon in 2:16:02 — a course record, then the third-fastest marathon ever run, and her best day since the 2019 world record. In October, Ruth Chepngetich defended Chicago with 2:14:18 after a first half of 65:44 that read like a half marathon race — fourteen seconds from Kosgei's mark, with the fade to prove the pace. She had also taken Nagoya that spring, a title she would defend the next year.
And the group's future announced itself: Beatrice Chebet — today its defining athlete — won the Diamond League 5000 m title in Zürich at 22, her first full season at the top; her championship medals of that summer were won in federation kit. Kosgei won the Tokyo Marathon in a course-record 2:16:02; Chepngetich defended Chicago in 2:14:18 — the second-fastest marathon in history at the time, fourteen seconds from Kosgei's world record — and won Nagoya; and 22-year-old Beatrice Chebet won the Diamond League 5,000 m title in her breakout season.
Why is 2022 called the near-miss year?
Because Chicago came down to fourteen seconds between one Rosa athlete's run and another Rosa athlete's record — team-mate chasing team-mate across three years. Chepngetich closed the account in 2024 with 2:09:56.
